* Almost 10 years after it was published in Escrita, this short story was the victim of an attempted intellectual property theft (falsidade ideológica). If it wasn’t for the memory of Luiz Ruffato and other writers and critics who denounced the crime, the Cataguases Culture Department would not have withheld and discontinued the award (the carta retratatória dated September 19, 1985).

THE AUTHOR

Professor Albuquerque (b. 1952) is a retired emeritus professor of Brazilian literature at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he lives half the year, alternating seasons with his hometown of Maceió, Brazil.
